Die Entstehung von Savannen – Gräser und Huftiere im Wettstreit

Eine gut entwickelte Grasschicht ist ein typisches Merkmal von Savannen. Viele Gräser der Savanne sind sogenannte C4-Pflanzen. Der Einfluss von Tieren, Menschen oder Feuer hat die „Architektur“ der Savanne über viele Millionen Jahre hinweg geprägt. Pflanzenfresser sowie Gräser der Savanne sind klassische Beispiele für Coevolution. Die gegenseitige Anpassung zeigt sich z.B. in der Einlagerung von Kieselsäure in die Blätter (als Fraßschutz) und Ausprägung von hochkronigen Zähnen bei den Tieren (gegen zu schnelle Abnutzung).
