Abstract

Attalea ist eine neotropische Palmengattung aus der Unterfamilie Arecoideae. Innerhalb der Attaleinae ist sie eine Schwestergruppe der Kokospalme (Cocos nucifera). Da die Gattung noch relativ jung ist, eine hohe Hybridisierungsrate auftritt und nur wenig gute Herbarbelege existieren, ist die Evolution von Attalea bisher nicht vollständig enträtselt. Die Babassupalme (Attalea speciosa) ist die sozio-ökonomisch bedeutendste Art der Gattung, vor allem wegen des aus ihren Samen gewonnenen Öls. Obwohl fast alle Pflanzenteile dieser Palme insbesondere in Brasilien und Bolivien seit Jahrhunderten genutzt werden, bietet A. speciosa immer noch ein großes, nachhaltig zu erforschendes Nutzungspotenzial.
