Abstract

Twenty species of ferns have been detected in the area between the rivers Weisse Elster and Wethau (eastern part of the Burgenlandkreis, southern Saxony-Anhalt) during the past 130 years. The Royal Fern (Osmunda regalis) is extinct near Osterfeld. The populations of Moonwort (Botrychium lunaria) and the Adder’s-tongue (Ophioglossum vulgatum) in the northern part of the study area (between Deuben and the state border to Saxonia) have increased. This is a former coalmining area with young grounds and in some parts these species even occur quite frequently.
