Abstract

A remarkable Hieracium population growing at Schloss Dyck near Juechen (lower Rhine area, North Rhine Westphalia) has been known for almost 100 years and placed within H. racemosum. But in fact it belongs to H. compositum, a Pyrenean species. Taxonomy, habitat situation and culture history of the species is described. Its presence at Schloss Dyck is obviously connected with the creation of the botanical garden by Prince Joseph Maria zu Salm-Reifferscheidt-Dyck, who was a distinguished botanist himself. Further details on floristic reports of H. racemosum in North Rhine-Westphalia are also discussed. We came to the conclusion that H. racemosum has been misidentified in all the documented reports and should therefore be excluded from the flora of North Rhine-Westphalia.
