Abstract

Carex liparocarpos s. str. was first recorded for Germany in 2017 by Albert Oesau in the NSG Lennebergwald near Mainz. This new finding is described and discussed in terms of the general distribution range and the species’ range wide occurrence in plant communities. The new data compilation reveals numerous interesting facts, yet many crucial questions and ambiguities remain. The species is closely related to C. supina, with which it is often confused. In Ukrainia, the distinction from C. schkuhrii (Syn. C. liparocarpos subsp. bordzilowskii) is unclear. With C. turkestanica, the species group (Subsect. Nitidae) reaches Middle Asian mountain areas. The main distribution type of the species is here correctly characterized as Submediterranean-West Pannonian. Azonal range parts are represented by South Atlantic, Northern Adriatic and Pontic dune regions. Mediterranean-alpine, isolated outposts were found in North Africa to about 30° N. In Northern France and in the eastern, Pontic range part there are few isolated outposts, up to about 50° N, many of which are endangered or extinct. C. liparocarpos s. str. is mainly confined to neutral-basic sand steppes, dunes, river gravel and rock erosion sites and most typical for the vegetation orders Festucetalia vaginatae, Festucetalia valesiacae, Artemisio albae-Brometalia erecti, Scorzoneretalia villosae, Trachynietalia distachyi, Ononidetalia striatae and Artemisio-Koelerietalia. Based on the current information on distribution and habitat relationships, the naturalization status of the new found record is evaluated. According to current floristic knowledge, a neophytic introduction seems probable – but a natural occurrence cannot be excluded, since the habitat at the record location is an almost perfectly typical vegetation community and isolated outposts seem to be not uncommon for the species. However, regarding the intensive botanical exploration of the record’s locality, a synanthropic origin is more likely.
