Abstract

According to the current orthographic rules the German species name of Dianthus carthusianorum has to be spelled "Kartäuser-Nelke" (without h). This coincides with the medieval etymological origin and with other European languages. But the version "Karthäuser-" is also in current use and cannot be simply declared as incorrect, since it has a long tradition. From the 16th to the 19th century it was the dominant form in German speaking countries and has obviously influenced Linné when coining the scientific species epithet.
